John Greenwald Jr., author of the 2019 release "Inside the Black Vault: The Government's UFO Secrets Revealed," has gathered the documents through a series of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and, in mid-2020, purchased a CIA-produced CD-ROM disk of what the agency says is its comprehensive collection of documents on the matter.
"Although the CIA claims this is their 'entire' collection, there may be no way to entirely verify that," Greenwald wrote on his website, theblackvault.com, which contains all of the material. "Research by The Black Vault will continue to see if there are additional documents still uncovered within the CIA's holdings."
The download comes in two versions, a pair of zip files 149 and 342 megabytes in size, and thousands of individual pdf files. The first of the zip files contains files in a .tif format, which Greenwald says are not searchable, and corresponding text files, which he says are "useless."
The second file has converted the items into pdf documents.
A Defense Department team was tasked with studying UFOs, the Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon (UAP) Task Force, announced last summer it would publicly release its findings and was to report at least some of its work to the Senate Intelligence Committee every six months.
