Round ball 45 70

I cast up some .490 pure lead balls for the contender 45 70, sized them first to .462 ......yes, it was a grunt, and then down to .459  ........much easier. Lubed with Lee liquid alox.
 
Now for powder.........Unique? Bullseye? What are you using? Is Bullseye position sensitive?
 
The idea is to have a plinking load that comes as close to the peep sight settings that I have adjusted for the 360gr hunting load. If I can`t get the POI close, even with titrating the powder charge, then the plan was a bust. It would be nice to have a plinking / small game load for in the field for shooting small game or varmints that hits reasonably close to the POI at 25m.
 
Anyone done this?

Years ago I loaded some swaged round balls in .45-70 cases over 5gr of Unique and shot some Artic Hare.  Very effective at about 50 yards.  They didn't even kick when hit.

They were slightly oversized.  That's 30+ years ago, so I don't remember the exact dia., but they just fit the case slightly below the center of the ball.

If it were me I'd use Trail Boss, it's designed for such applications.

With any fast powder taking up so little space I would lift the muzzle to settle it back to the primer, and I WILL NOT use any over-powder wad to hold such in position ever again.
Unique, Red Dot, Bullseye and Trail Boss are all in my inventory and I would try any of them. I would press the ball flush to the case mouth and smear a ring of a stiffish lube in the recess.
As to POI...... only one way to find out if it will be close enough for your needs, but it is easy enough to trial.

Trail boss powder would be a good choice but I use 25g of H322 behind a 405 grain bullet as my plinker loads.

I loaded some up using Red Dot awhile back.  I don't remember the load I was using but they shot tight groups from my Handi rifle. 

Another load I liked was a cast 220g .452" bullet for the .45acp Teflon tape patched up to .459 and loaded over Unique but I don't remember how much.  I seem to recall less than 10g of unique but don't try it unless you look it up.

I've been wanting one of the Lyman collar button molds for a long time but they never seem to be in stock when I have the money.
