Ackley Improved
« on: October 30, 2009, 04:20:14 PM »
I have been reading that some folks have Ackley improved calibers on  their Handi's

If I were to have a .280 barrel fitted and then reamed into a .280 improved would it still be "correct" for firing? or would I need to send it to a smith to re head space?

Thanks

A true Ackley improved cannot be done on a Handi Rifle.  You can get some imitation of it, but not a proper one.  Larry

Edit:  It can be done with a 30-30 or other rimmed cartridge.  Larry

::) Why not? It is a simple matter of reaming a Ackley Imp chamber.   26-t

you have to set the barrel back to clean up a 280 chamber, I don't see anyway to set the barrel back on a handi rifle.

"The 280 Ackley Improved and the 280 Remington Improved RCBS are basically the same except for shoulder angle. With the standard chamber and neck diameter of 0.318, the factory 280 Remington cartridges can be fired to produce the improved cases. The neck junction is set back 0.004" in the 280 AI chamber for a tight fit when standard 280 Remington cases are fired.

Fire forming will shorten the cases by 0.012" to 0.015". The common chamber dimensions are: base 0.469", shoulder diameter 0.455", neck 0.318, chamber length is about 2.555 depending on reamer maker

See the Handloading for the Improved Handi thread in the FAQs. You can do a true Acklely rimless rechamber on a Handi, but you have to remove some from the barrel face first then refit the barrel, I just did that to a 270 barrel that wasn't properly fitted by the factory, it shoots factory 270 ammo just fine. If you rechamber to an Improved rimless chamber, you must either form a false shoulder on the brass to fire form it, or load long with the bullet hard into the lands to eliminate the excess headspace, I have a 280 Improved Ultra that I did that on. Rimmed chamberings are much easier, but it's critical that you headspace on the shoulder or you may end up with split brass as I did in my 30-30AI when shooting 30-30 ammo it it.

Forget the Ackley for the above reasons & go with a 7mm JRS.  No problems just clean out the old 280 chamber + a wee bit.  The JRS has a longer head to shoulder length than the 280 which means that the datum line is greater.
Try to look unimportant.   Your enemy might be low on ammo.

Only Handi so far is a 375 JDJ.

The gain isn't worth the effort or the money.  It may have been in the distant past before we had the current powders & bullets.

Thanks guys, I am building up a Multi barrel set up for my new receiver, I want something just a little different than the norm maybe a fire breather or speed demon.

I have ordered a .500S&W I think that will be a hoot to shoot.
