Survivor Chopjob question?
« on: June 22, 2005, 11:24:09 AM »
I'm pondering getting a survivor and bobbing it to 16.5" for a super compact hunting rig. considering the 5.5" loss I know my velo will fizzle some, I just don't know which would suffer more the .223 or .308? also, if anyone has done anything similar how is the balance?

I think I would be more worried about the muzzle blast and flash you'll get with them...especially the 308...

mt3030 has a .30-.30 trimmed to 18" that he swears by for a truck gun.  It isn't a survivor stock, but a "shorty" non-the-less.

I have to agree with Mac though about the fireball a .308 would make.  However,  a .44 mag barrel on a survivor stock with a 16" barrel would be verrrry interesting.

I tihnk that would be a great idea especaily for a truck gun. I need sometin like that for the jeep on our new 300 acre place as the wild dogs are rampant out there. mt3030 you wouldnt happen to have a pic of your shortie would you?

In the 2004 list they're $55 for the butt and $26 for the forend, cinnamon or camo, same price as the full size.

Choate Machine & Tool makes the survivor stocks (and more) for our guns.

The Survivor buttstock is $32.20 and the fore-end is $14.50.

Great people to deal with and quick shipping.

what the heck, why not go whole hog and whittle a 45-70 bbl down to 16.5"  put a tamer stock on it and make a bonafide hand cannon? that would give that big boar and me both a shock!

The adult or youth stocks are $55 and $26, doesn't matter.

I've never heard they were sold out of em, I seriously doubt it....Call em or email em and ask for the current price and availability...Whilst you're at it, ask for a 2005 Retail Price list.....  The only laminated stock that I know they don't have are the specialty color stocks like the red, gray or the bumble bee laminated stocks.

ahem.....if they quit making them, they'd have a hard time selling Ultras!!! :-D

http://www.hr1871.com/firearms/index.php?cat=4&subcat=22

Mac just ordered a camo laminated stock set for his 30-06 Ultracomp a couple months ago....

Tim

Maybe they don't sell the straight grip version though....I don't think they have that on any current model rifle or shotgun. :?

Regarding the Survivor "Chop Job", I just took and posted this picture for Marlinman who wanted to see the Survivor stocks but the top gun may be of interest regarding short Handi's. The top gun is my Survivor stocked 19" barrelled .280 Remington (Thanks Lik2hunt!!). I have fitted it with a Williams rear peep sight and a H&R .22 Hornet front sight. It is a great truck gun. Short, light, powerful, and accurate!!!
The second gun is my Survivor stocked .22 Mag Sportster coyote gun topped with a Millet Red Dot that will shoot 1" groups if I do my part. A great coyote gun!!!
The bottom is my newest, a .22 LR Sportster with the synthetic stock set replaced with a wooden stock set and a set of .22 Hornet iron sights added. A great fun gun and deadly on squirrels raiding my wife's bird feeders in the back yard using .22 Super Colibri's for head shots...One Shot - One Kill!!!....<><....

I hope the view of the 19" .280 truck gun with the Survivor stock is of some help, the others just happened to be in the picture....

Thanks much MSP those look great. IM deffinetly ordering a set of survivor stocks for my 17 like tomarrow. Is the forearm interchangable from bull barrel to regular or are the separate. I was thinking of sending my 17 hummer in for a 22 mag barrel for the expact reason MSP has his for. I also have a burris red dot waiting to be used on sometihn. It looks jsut perfect for my dog and beaver problem i ahve on my farm plus some coons and such so a 22 mag is a welcome power upgrade over the 17 (but i still love it to death)

Marlinman, the "Storearm forearm" works great on my standard diameter .22 Mag Sportster barrel and also it fits great on my  shortened .280 Ultra (heavy) barrel. I have even had one on my 12 gauge slug gun for a while and it fit fine and worked great!....<><....

considering how tempermental some of the superlights are reported to be, I think shortening the bbl might take out some of the whip, and what a featherweight truck gun that would be.  :P

Marlinman,
Just to tease you and due to your name. If small caliber are too small, have a look, just for eye's pleasure.

During my quest of a new singleshot, my smith had suggested this one;

Obviously, it is a 444 !. It was too much for me, as i was searching a 22Hornet.

Ah yes i know all about the litttle katadin carbine. My uncel has one in 450 he bought for his alberta black bear hunt last year. Its a real shooter but you have pay attention to your hold or the rifle corrects you rather painfully. He has an Aimoint comp on it and it consisteantly shotts 1.5 inch groups at 100. I was thinking about buildning one but in 308 for a nice pig gun but then i got my 444p so there wasnt much need. But i am very interested in these shortie handis for a farm and ranch gun and a light wieght swamp gun for deer and hog. those lil rifles are very true to there name i think

What would you guys think of something like this? A .223 superlight with the barrel cut back to 16 1/2'', add a williams peep sight, and have the barrel thredead to accept an AR-15 flash hider. I have not done this but am courious in getting a superlight for this purpose. Also, if I were to do such a conversion what could iI use for a front sight?
