I like it, what do you guys think, forend stud hole fix.
« on: October 01, 2012, 07:15:38 AM »
The stud hole form my 30-30 what in my opinion worn out.  The screw sat about a 1/4 inch inside the hole when tightened and it bothered me.  I found a brass ferule for copper tubing fittings and thought it would fit the hole. It fit perfect and after I tightened the screw down it fit snug into the hole.  Do you think this is a good fix or might it cause problems in the future.  It does look pretty good.  I am attaching pics of the fitting I am talking about and how it looks.

I do not think it will hurt a thing and the brass gives it a bit of class. If you epoxy the brass ferrule in, you have sort of pillar bedded it. I have pillar bedded my fore ends with aluminum pillars and used a button head screw.

It looks great to me.  As long as nothing is binding on the barrel it should be peachy dandy.  I've got a messed up swivel stud hole in the butt stock on one of my rifles and I'm gonna give it your cure ;)

I think this ferule was for 3/8 inch copper tubing.  It doesn't go all the way thru the forend but far enough to take up the extra space I had.  It fits like it was made for it and has a beveled opening so the forend screw fits perfect.

Very nice.  One could do it just to make a rifle look nicer.  And it makes the forend more solidly fastened as mentioned.  I marvel at the creativity people come up with to make these rifles better.  Thanks.

I was just trying to fix something that bugged me.  I am glad everyone likes it.  If it fixes the accuracy problems I have been having with that gun I will be really happy.  I will find that our this weekend.

NY, accuracy problems with the .30-30 are just about unheard of.  It oughta be a simple fix.  Perhaps lurking in the FAQs.

I plan on checking the FAQs out some more.  I already got a different brand of ammo to try.  It doesn't seem to like Rem Corloks so I got some federal to try in it.

Nice, heading to hardwear store to pick up a few, one of my 30-30 would not shoot 150's that well, but loved 170's. Thanks for the tip.

Hey reclusej, where did you get the brass screws?  They look really nice.

Looks good.
Flat washer inleted into my stock is plumb embarrasing. Taper for the screwhead in the washer is uneven but the gun is accurate. . Don't see where your rig would be any harm.

The two part brass ferrel shown in the picture is for PEX supplies most for copper are tappered on both sides . You can also get the ones for PEX in both white and gray ( maybe other colors ) for those wanting colored spacers .
BTW most suppliers don't supply the brass ferrels for PEX any more as it seems to cut the tube and most now require plastic . If you find them get a supply as they may not restock them.
There are also cone washers aval.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !
