A head's up for anyone looking for a .44 magnum Handi rifle.Davidson's has a Talo "Trapper" with 18-3/4" barrel and iron sights for $234.00.I ordered one today.It should be here next Tuesday.I was speaking with a Davidson's rep on the phone and inquired if they had any .44 magnum Handi rifles and he told me about this one.A trapper model with a wee bit shorter barrel sounded mighty tempting to me.They have 24 of them in stock.I'll post when I receive the rifle.

Nice buy. I can't decide between the .357 or the .44 Trapper.

I already own both calibers in "regular" Handi's, but I want a Trapper.

Did you notice R&R has the 7mm mag and 300 Mag listed in the Handi? Not available, but none-the-less listed? Heard anything from H&R people on these?

I bought the Talo .357 from rrarms... I tried the open sights...but I should of known better.

I put a 3 x 9 bushnell banner scope on it, with some medium burris zee rings and it is a shooter out of the box. I shot a 3 shot group of about 5/8" center to center at 50 yds with 180 gr cast performance wfngc.

I checked the trigger pull and it was 4lbs. They may have polished that up while doing their modifications.

The 357 and 44 mag Trappers come on SB1 frames(SB1-35T and SB1-44T), the 45-70 Trapper(SB2-47T) comes on an SB2 frame.

The 7mm and 300 Mag Handi-Mags were canceled in Jan 2008 before they were ever produced, H&R never rcvd enough distributor pre-orders, so they were dumped without ever being made.

I ordered a Talo Trapper in 45-70 yesterday. It should be in at end of next week. I plan on shooting factory loads in it. What do ya'll think, will the factory buttpad be enough or should I get a Limbsaver for it (or rather for me)? Also, what loads would you recommend? I'm looking at the Winchester 300 gr., the Hornady 325 gr., and the Remington 405 gr. I'll be hunting deer, hog and black bear with it here in TN with a 150 to 175 yd shot being a long one. ive done some seaching an came up short,but can the sb1 handle the 445 supermag,im thinking not.but thought i would ask.ive been tossing around the idea of a short handi in 357max,445sm an 454 for about a year now.i think it would be the greatest tree stand gun for 100yrds you could own.with these guns coming out an the thought of possible 445sm an my savings account full of cash from income tax makes the hairs on the back of my neck go wooo whooo.

That's questionable, the Supermag has a bit more pressure than the 44mag with top loads, 43kcup vs 40kcup.

The TALO .44 magnum Trapper came in to my local shop today.I went and picked it up.Neat looking little rifle.
The barrel looks shorter than it's 18-3/4" length.It was made in Ilion,NY.The receiver is an SB-1.Front and rear sights are good metal Weaver sights,not like the cheap plastic on the last 45/70 Handi I bought.The receiver is kind of a parkerized looking finish.The barrel is blued.Lock up is good and TIGHT.Everything seems to be in it's proper place and working.It does not come with a scope base.We called Davidson's thinking it might have fallen out but they said the literature does not show it as coming with scope base.I cleaned the bore good.Tomorrow is range day for me so I will see how "little man" does.Hey,I just coined a name for my new rifle.

For me a fun day is 405 grains lead over Lee 3.1 dipper of Trailboss with a standard large rifle primer. I always check my H&R to make sure barrel is clear before next round but this is my idea of plinking with a cannon. I cut and crowned my barrell at 18". 3.1 Lee dipper works out to about 13-14 grains of the Trailboss by my math. I have fired 50 rounds in a day through mine walking through the desert scrub here in Az with no worries due to recoil on my elderly arms and shoulders. It shoots a 2" circle at 50yds offhand with a reddot scope.

At the range today it only took five shots to get the Williams rear sight height adjusted so that I could hit the center of the bull at 25 yards consistently.I then moved out to the 100 yard range and did ok but not great.I think it is the short sight radius.I shot five shots in a 3" group at 100 yards.On the way home I stopped by my gunsmith and picked up a scope rail which I installed late this evening and topped it of with a beautiful vintage Weaver El Paso K1-1/2X20.This is identical to the scope on my 45/70 Handi so I guess I have "Big Man" and "Little Big Man".
It looks great with the scope installed.I will have to wait for next Wednesday's range day to see how it does with this scope.

Now you're talking, I can't shoot worth beans with open sights any more, I can't tell which rear sight to use, I think it's the lower one, but the ghost sight above it sure makes it hard to see the front sight thru it!!!

Maybe I should use the ghost for a long range POI!!

Peeps are fine, but scopes are preferred for my old eyes!!

I got one of the old Weaver K 1.5X20's on my Win 94 Trapper in 45 Colt. Sure helped tighten groups up compared to open sights. If I try to use open sights all I see is fuzz on one of the sights, ain't to bad on windage but sure opens up for elevation.
