I just HAD to have one...Rem750 Woodsmaster in 35 Whalen....
« on: January 27, 2010, 02:59:01 AM »
....so...the local gun shop in southern Maine had six in stock at a sale price of $550.  Good buddy bought one and I liked it and went and bought one as well.  So.....other than a 10/22 and a couple of ARs...this is the very first hunting semi that I've owned.  It looks really nice I'll say that.

I already know that I'm going to remove the sights as I can't really focus on them at all and they are useless based on my astigmatism.  I'll mount a 2x7 leupold on it....but...the leupold base that I bought for it doesn't fit at all.  It's too short and reciever holes do not line up...contacted Leupold for suggestions as there isn't another listed.  Any one have any suggestions????

The trigger is abysmal....heavy and creepy....it will go to my smith for correction.

I haven't function fired it yet...this weekend.  I've read that it needs 100+ rounds to break in....I'll shoot at least that many before sending it into the gunsmith.

All in all I have mixed feelings about it....we'll see if it still tickles my fancy after I get to work with it.

Love the Whelen!  My deer load is a very accurate 180 gr. bullet throttled back to around 2700 fps.  Might could kick it up to around 3K if I wanted to take it Prong Horn hunting!   :D

Now, on the other hand, I haven't had much use for a semi-automatic rifle since I turned in my M1...  :-\

But if it makes you happy, LET LOOSE THE DOGS OF WAR and get those break-in rounds downrange!   ;D

Long live the 35!! Way ta go!! Stay positive - know you are gonna love it!

"Just had to have" - no better way to state a need! LOL! ;D

Didn't realize you were in Southern Maine. Though we lived in Calais way back then, my best pal lives on Scott St in Portland, Me. We still have periodic conversations and get caught up on the home folks.

I think a 180 at 2700 would be plenty adequate for antelope. I ran 150's around 2850 in my 8x57 for antelope - longest shot being 350yards by my ex#2. Ah, those were different times.... we still liked each other.. before she started liking my hunting buddy. Funny how that goes....

Congrats!!  I have a 750 in 30-06 on order and I can't stand the wait.  You may have gotten a scope mount for the 740 instead of the 7400/750.  Double check that and let us know.  By the way $550 is an outstanding deal and would have been crazy to have passed up.

You guys'r funny....Teddy!!!...I got a leupold 1 piece mount, #92223??  and it is stamped 760 right on the metal.  Today I ordered another for a 7600 #92224...hope it works.  I plan to shoot 100 rounds and then take it to LaRocca Gun Works in Worcester MA and have him work magic on the trigger!!!

Bought the 750 35 Whelen carbine this past fall. I had great trepidation considering the reviews I read on the gunboards. But between it being a Remington, a carbine and a 35 Whelen I was drawn in like a moth to a flame.

Traded a Remington SP-10 to Budsgunshop.com and only had to lay out $40 bucks. The SP-10 was gathering dust. I did not need a 14 lb gun to kill a kurkey.

I mounted a Nikon Prostaff 2X7 first with a Warne QD scope mount, my favorite mount, but later remounted it with a O/U scope mount. Just liked the way the scope sat up high and that is the set up I have on my 7600 35 Rem carbine that I like so much.

Sighted in the gun no problem, no feeding issues, tested five different 30-06 mags I use with my 7400 all no problem and did not have the problem that I have with the 7400 of shots wandering after the barrel heats up.

Only carried the gun this year. Did not shoot anything. The only problem is the screw that attaches the sling to the swivel scratched the forarm up bad and I did not notice until the damage was done.

The jury is still out on this gun but it is working so far.

MIKE.

Thanks Mike...going to try'er out tomorrow.  Tried to make 35wh cases from 06 till I get some 35wh brass.  Split 5 right down the middle...did get 20 to form though and loaded them.  We'll see.

I made my 35Whelen cases from mil-surp 30-06 cases. Some I took to 32caliber and then to 35caliber, others I just lubed and ran up the 35 die.  Didn't seem to make much difference. I split about 20% of them, which I shortened and use in my 356Winchester - I hate to throw things out. I have way over a thousand cases, so it really isn't a problem for me to split that many. I won't live long enough to wear them out.

If you need 35 Whelen case give me your address off line and I will send some to you. I don't have many but I'm never going to use then.
