Dicks Sporting goods Camo stocked .308 handi
« on: October 18, 2009, 11:00:06 AM »
Anyone have the Dick's sporting goods Camo .308 handi-rifle? They have them on sale this week for $250 and I have been thinking of picking one up, as I need a longer range rifle. Mostly for target, maybe some varmint (woodchuck, coyote) as well, and of course, a SHTF backpacking rifle.

I have read on here the .308's are shooters, I would imagine the Dick's special is no different? I would be reloading for it as well, I already have 1k LR primers, and only load the occasional box .35 remington, But I will break her in good with factory loads, gotta make brass somehow ;)

I would consider the .22-250, but .308 is widely available and I could also buy surplus.

Any advice will be considered. I also want to look at a Marlin XS7 in .308, If I can find one in stock somewhere. I like the idea of the Handi being able to be packed up smaller, though.

I dont think you can go wrong with a 308 handi. Ive only had handis for 3 years or so. To date my best shooter was a 308 standard contour barrel. Never shoulda sold that one.
I dont care what gun Im using as long as Im hunting

If you want other calibers, I noticed that Gander Mountain just started stocking these camo models in .444 and 45-70.  With a nickel receiver and the new shaped synthetic camo stock.

I bought one last summer and it's a shooter! First thing you need to do is put agood scope on it. I went into it expecting to have to do that. I put a Nikon prostaff 3X9X40. Did the JB bore paste thing, and after getting it sighted in I was shooting 1.5" at 100 yards with the coffee jitters and 150gr rem corelokts. I have about 80 rounds through it now and the group size when I do my part are getting better. Halloween weekend we will be at hunting camp and I can't wait to get it bloody. When I got mine it was on sale for $259 and I had a $10 coupon, so for $250 jump on it!

Just came back from the local Dick's an hour or so ago. They have the scoped camo 223, 22-250 and 308 for $299. Also, they have the scoped Marlin 30-30 for $329!!! Typical, when I don't have any money to do anything about it.

Well, I get my paycheck as well as 3 weeks vacation pay Friday (our company gives vacation pay all at once on your hire date..odd) So I will probably be going to Dick's Friday before work. If they have a handi in .308 I might even buy one :) I will probably take the 6.5-20x44 Simmons 44mag off my 10/22 to put on the rifle, or buy another nikon since I like the nikon I have. If They dont have a handi in stock, Might see if they carry marlin xs-7...again in .308. Curious to handle one of those...I have handled a handi before and Like them quite a bit!

Hey between now and Friday stop at Dick's and buy something cheap like less than $10 Keep the receipt and go on line and do their survey (takes about 5 minutes) when you are done you can print a $10 off a purchase of $50 or more coupon to use on your rifle.

Well, I stopped at dicks yesterday to look at the handi rifle. They had a .22-250 on the shelf, and a .308 and .223 in back. I looked at the .22-250 figured it wasnt that much different than the .308. Well, with the synthetic stock, the gun felt so nose heavy I did not like it one bit. Unless the .308 is vastly different, I think I will be looking elsewhere or may just play with the old savage .30-30 single shot break barrel I have for the 16ga frame. Or, might just look for a Marlin XS7 in .308.

Too bad, I like the handi's with wood stock, but they cost a lot more around me. seems no one sells them, either!

The 308 doesn't seem nose heavy to me maybe because of the larger bore there is more weight removed. you could always buy the wood stocks from H&R or put a want to buy here on GBO.

Hey woodchuck, I held the 308 when I bought the 223 and I was surprised how different they felt to me. I may be wrong but I was thinking the 308 is 22 bull and the other two are 24" ??? You may want to go feel it first. I thought the larger bore may have reduced the weight a little also. If you get one take off the scope adjustment caps and look at the plastic adjuster, mine was split and they were nice enough to just give me another scope. I may still get a 308. You could prolly sell the bull barrel with rings and scope and get a 22" standard and still have the frame and camo stocks. ;) Good Luck - spending your vacation pay ;D

I may go take a second look at the 308. Not sure when though, I kind of have plans tomorrow before work. I think. The bull barrel .223 I handled at a gun shop, which had wood stock, balanced quite well, yet I like the idea of a synthetic stock on a gun thats gonna be a beat around gun! Otherwise, I am not a fan of synthetic at all.

I will surely keep this updated...

The only negative thing I had about the combo was the scope. The eye relief was minimal at best and the adjustments were backwards up was down and right was left. having bought Dick's combo package in the past i new it was going to be a cheap scope so I just went ahead and put the Nikon on it. I didn't even bother shooting the 308 with the original scope from dick's on it.

I have a simmons 44mag 6.5-20x scope I would likely put on it. Its on my 10/22 right now haha. Or, buy a better scope. I agree that cheap scope cant be worth  much, I adjusted it to 12x (on the 22-250) and it was blurry  and just a junk scope.
