Twist Rate

Has H&R changed their twist rate for the .44 Mag or is it still 1-38"? I tried searching but couldn't find anything other than the 1-38".

It's still the SAAMI standard 1:38", but the bores were tightened up starting in 2007.

Thanks Quick, you are a wealth of knowledge. And it is good to hear that they tightened it up. What would you say, the heaviest bullet you could use in the handi with that twist and the bore being tightened up. I know when i was researching it that the bore was not very tight and it was effecting accuracy with certain weights.

I think 300gr is pretty much the limit in the .44, if you can push them faster, for example in a 445 Supermag, or the .444 , 330-360gr is about it. I have no experience with the .44, just going by what I've read. Marshall Stanton of Beartooth bullets has done extensive testing of big bullets in the Marlin 444S(1:20) and 444P(1:38), pushed harder, the bigger bullets work in the slow twist, but in the 44mag, 300gr is about the limit, I don't recollect anyone shooting 330gr in em, 300gr XTPs work real good in the 445 Supermag tho which is an easy hand rechamber, but I don't know if the SB1 version would handle the pressures involved which is a good bit higher than the 44mag.

I have both, but have only shot factory LE ammo in them, the 44mag did real good, the 357 didn't, I also had a Max which I had a rechamber to 35 Remington done which shoots real good. I don't hunt with either one, my deer hunting areas are mixed brush and clear cuts, neither would be good in a clear cut where shot opportunities beyond 300yds are very possible.
