What stock should I use?

Modify and paint the factory wood stocks
Choate varmint stocks
Factory synthetic stocks
I'm crazy and should leave the factory stocks un touched

Let's Ponder Stocks...
« on: December 26, 2007, 05:59:36 PM »
Ok, I like the factory stocks, but there are a few places I would sand down to fit my hand better.

I want a camo gun, as it's my varmint sniper...

And I also like heavier guns to shoot accurate with, but in the field they kinda stink....

I am not asking you guys to tell me what to do, just want some opinions from ya'll.

Thanks!  Have fun!

Rick :D

Factory synthetic stocks are all Choate stocks, but I think you mean the Choate Varmint stock. You left one option out, the factory laminated stocks which are my favorite, just get em in camo laminate. The factory also offers synthetic camo and wood camo stocks. ;)

Tim

Synthetic camo

Wood camo

Camo laminate, uncheckered, also available checkered

t-hole camo laminate

As you can tell, I really like the factory laminated stocks! ;D

Yeah, the choate varmint stocks  ::)   Poll changed   ;D

And I am going to paint the whole gun too, not just the stocks, so the laminate stocks are too pretty for that.  Maybe my next handi  will get a laminate stock set  ;)

Keep those votes coming in!!

Thanks for the neat pics of the stocks too!!!

in general I prefer the real walnut checkered TDC or Buff Classic stocks from H&R but also have and enjoy the H&R Camo Laminate. Another choice would be to scape off the lousy single finish (stain and finish mixed together) that is used on the standard palletwod stocks and properly stain and finish the stocks with whichever finish you prefer, I happen to like Tung Oil with a satin or "oil finish" as opposed the a Weatherby gloss type of finish....<><....:)

Oh yes, seeing that picture reminds me, I sometimes remove the pistol grip and change the issue buttstock into a straight English or "squire" style stock, very comfortable and fast handling. The next project is to do that same thing to a Monte Carlo stock and perhaps to do a little shaping or thinning of the leading edge of the Monte Carlo section itself to resemble a Shutzen style stock. I do believe I saw one similar to that here one time and it has intrigued me ever since....<><....:)

Thanks for adding those pictues Tim.....<><....:)

When I switched my 223 from wood to Choate varmint fore arm my groups cut in half.
I used the synthetic monti carlo stock (much slimmer than the wood) and painted sandstone.

Not that I did'nt like the other choices, just had other ideas, and so made my own stock, from an old burl slab that I was using as a yard table.

If you want the weight, the Choate Varmint stock is the heaviest of the bunch at 2lbs-2oz, followed by the factory laminated stocks. Of course you can always add weight to all of the stocks bolt holes except the Varmint. ;)

elkslayer4x5, that is a nice stock and it appears to be an outstanding piece of wood, you must really have great yard tables where you are!! The workmanship looks to be nice also. Congratulations on a great job, especially from scratch....<><....:)

Elkslayer,
Beautiful wood and extra fine workmanship from what I can see. You did a GREAT job!!!!!! ;)

As far as the options for the poll, I checked the only one close to what I liked. I'm not a synthetic or laminate person. I love the real woods. AND I don't use stains.... I like the natural woods and their colors. If you would have had an option of "making a wood stock or purchase natural wood" I would have checked it over all of them. Choate most likely has wonderful stocks, but as I say, I don't like the synthetics especially the style of the Choate Varmint/Sniper stocks. The forend will pass, if it was in natural woods. I am currently working on a Gunstocks, Inc Fiddle-back Maple thumb-hole Stinger. I like the style of that and the rollover stock. On completion I will of course post a photo of it.
And something really needs to be done with the pallet wood stocks from the factory. The synthetics are much better than those. Definitely!!!!

Isn't it great that people don't like the same things. Sure would be a boring world if we did.
There are some really great ideas that folks have. If you haven't looked for a while go through the photos and see what people have done with their Handis. Great work folks, great work.

Could you post a picture of one you've removed the pistol grip from?  That is one project I would like to try on mine.

Fred has done some wonderful work reshaping Ultra stocks to make them more appealing and not so bulky!

What is the difference between the rifle stocks and the shotgun stocks in terms of LOP and drop at the comb or is there any?  I see the fore ends are not the same at all and I was just wondering if there would be a problem putting a shotgun stock on a rifle.  I would like to cut the pistol grip off of a set for my .44 and really like the shotgun fore end better.

Pallet wood Forends are all the same now, on older firearms had the beavertail forend on both rifle and shotgun. LOP is listed for all firearms on their website. All stocks are interchangable with a few exceptions on the 10ga shotgun and 12ga slug barrel forends.

The LOP is 1/4 inch more on the rifle but the comb and heel drop are not listed on the rifle at all so I guess there are the same 1 1/2 inch drop at the comb and 2 inches at the heel as the shotgun.

Does anyone know how much the Buffalo Classic stocks go for? I don't see them listed in the 2007 price list.

Seems to me they're about $122.50, but don't quote me on that, give H&R a call or email and ask em next week, then post the part number and price for us so I can add it to the price list page. ;)

I'm kind of partial to just plain old wood. Sometimes you get lucky and get
a stock with some good grain like my Hornet. The wood on this one is just
the way it came out of the box.

Sometimes you can refinish the pallet wood with Tru Oil like this and it turns out pretty good.
