.243 handi load?
« on: September 12, 2007, 05:57:36 AM »
I've switched deerguns from a savage .243 to a new .243 standard handi. reason being I was loading my boltie one at a time anyway so I could see my future as a singl-shot rifle hunter. the loads that did well for my savage were H380 (39grs) + 80gr pill. I'm thinking of switching powder to slower H4350.  anybody have a pet load their 243 Handi? // FYI: I almost didn't buy the .243 because of all the posts stating 243 handi's won't group. I had problems swallowing that since my cheap savage boltie did so well with 243..  so far I haven't been shooting enough to test the handi groups.

thanks, reloader #22 is very close (burn rate) to H4350 / I'm in the sticks and the nearest dealer(another county) stocking powder has mostly Hodgdon. .. I believe #22 is short-cut extruded logs

I've had pretty good luck with H4895 and the Speer 100gr BTSP in my Superlight, it's a book load right from Hodgdon, except I'm loading it .010" off the lands which puts it longer than theirs.

When I get home this evening I'll look up my load for the .243. I use IMR4350 and the 95 gr CT bullet for excellent results. 1/2" MOA I'll post it here for ya. - MJ

I load 42 gr of IMR 4350 behind a 95 gr Combined Technology WW Brass CCI LR Primers. Actual Crono from my rifle 2888 fps. Has been responsible for the death of numerous antelope white tails and muleys. One antelope at 427 yds on the range finder. Good luck and good shootin. - F50

The Nosler 5th puts that load ½gr over their max of 41.5gr, just a heads up for those that want to work with that combination, start load is 37.5gr, Rem 9½, Win brass, COL is 2.710". ;)

You're right Quick. I think it goes without saying any recommended load should be worked up to carefully. Thanks for the follow-up.

fanner- thanks for the load. sorry this reply took a while. I expect to purchase H4350 because I'm expecting it will do well in this handi. Sierra claims the 1:10 twist limits the bullet weight to 90gr.. I've got 80's and 100's // think I'll purchase a box of 90's to load-up with the H4350... will post reults

A load that shot real good for me in the 243 was 45 gr H4350 and a 75gr Vmax in federal brass CCi 200 primer at a length of 2.625"  That isn't really a deer load but it was a great shooter.  I tried 80 grain rem corelokt's over H4350 and they didn't do too well.  I had a little bit of AA3100 left so I loaded a few 80 grainers over the 3100 to use it up and they shot much better than the H4350 loads.  I just loaded up some more with a new lot of 3100 but I haven't been to the range yet.

I had a few loads with IMR4350 that did alright as well but I was trying to keep it to H4350 since that is what he said he was buying.  Its very interesting how much different 2 of the same guns can be when it comes to ammo preferences.  I think that is why I like to reload so much (always looking for that magic recipe).
