Peep on Buff Clas.
« on: February 26, 2007, 08:30:29 PM »
Hey guys, I have allways been bugged about how big the rear peep hole is on my 45/70 buff clasic, and was wondering if they make smaller inserts for it or what i could do to make it smaller. I just feel like with how big it is that there is a lot of room for eror. I have been wanting to put a tall tang peep on the top of the stock but am unsure of that too. Any one got any pics of their moded buff classics peepsights? Thanks.
Henry.

Ok guys, It looks like it worked on someone elses BC without having to drill. the peep sight is, Williams FP-H&R-TK Receiver Peep Sight White Systems H&R Buffalo Classic and Handi Rifles with Target Knobs Aluminum Black. So you just use the holes that are already there right? I just want to make sure that if i order it then i wont get messed over cuz you gota have a smith do it or drill. Thanks.

Another option is the Smith long Range sight, the one below is Bernie's, he shoots to 800yds with it. Costs about $170 with the optional peep slider, mounts in the same 2 rear scope mount holes as the WGRS that comes on the BC. You can also get numerous apertures for the WGRS or FP Target sights.

Quick
I'm sure you posted it before, but could you post a link to the smith long range sight?  It's awesome, and honestly, that (one like it) was what I had first ordered from Lee Shaver, but it turned out to be crap, and I ended up sending it back and got the Soule style.

How well do you like it?

I like it a lot since I got the peep slider, they use to come standard with it, but they quit when I bought mine, it came with a notch slider, I ordered a peep slider from TOTW which had the hole so close to the edge, it still looked like a notch to my eye, it wasn't a well defined aperture. After a bunch of emails to Smith Ent, they finally sent me a replacement that wasn't defective, had the hole in the center of the slider instead of near the top edge.

TOTW has several low cost creedmore sights that will work on the wrist of the BC also.

Try a Merit #3 adjustable aperature, it goes from .022" to .156" with a quick twist. I use one of these on my Marlin .45-70 tang sight. Just don't bid on the group of four currently on Ebay, as I am the current high bidder!

I think if you want the FP sight, you should get it from H&R, $65.95 shipped!

That is the same path I'm going to take, with the side knob for elevation tension. The Merit peep works real well when hunting in diminishing light. I nearly missed a good deer when I first started hunting with a peep, I couldn't get a clear sight picture through a smaller sized fixed aperture. The sight worked well at the range in mid-day, but came up short in the wooded draw in the evening. Luckily, the deer turned on the path and walked right up on me as I was trying to get a bead on him. I basically stove piped him at 10 yards, Stevie Wonder could have taken that deer. Study up on the Merit model you want and keep your eye open at gun shows and shops, you will eventually run across one at a fair price. The #4 target models don't open as wide. (.022" to .125") But sometimes come with a black rubber eye cup.
Oops, gotta get to work, I have a new habit to support...
