Thanks, Tim.  That's what I was looking for.  I know some of the guys do an economy job with wood dowels, too.  This info is for a friend who is newer to this stuff than I am.  I am sure he will find it useful.  I needed it too. ;D

Good link Tim, this is good info for those that aren't sure what exactly lapping is and whats involved.

I went over to Sinclair and tried to find the part number, but couldn't find it. Nor at Midsouth ???

I didn't find it either, they musta discontinued it and only offer the refills. I just ordered a lapping kit from Russ Haydon, he's got a special on it for $17.50$22.95.

I got the Haydon lapping tool today, they didn't ship until Thursday. :( It's well made, quite a piece of steel with nice bolt on handles. I lapped a set of Warne Maxima rings which are the vertical split rings, my alignment tool showed they were a little bit off, so I lapped them just for the experience even tho Warne says they don't need to be lapped, I read a thread that indicates it won't hurt them. The tool would work well on normal rings that split horizontally and you won't beat that price for a quality tool, but lapping vertical split rings is a pain. :-X
